About Hartville, MO

A post office called Hartville has been in operation since 1842. The community bears the name of Isaac Hart, a pioneer citizen. Much of the town was destroyed during the Battle of Hartville in 1863. John Wimer, who had served two nonconsecutive terms as mayor of St. Louis, sided with the Confederacy, even though he was opposed to slavery.
