About Loa, UT
A post office called Loa has been in operation since 1879. The town was named after Mauna Loa, in Hawaii, by a Mormon missionary who had returned from that place. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km²), all of it land. Loa sits beside the only source of water known as Spring Creek, which rises 4 miles (6 km) to the north where today is located the state fish hatchery.
