About Bogue, NC

June 1899 was marked by two murders in the tiny town. On June 9, Elijah Weeks, a white merchant was found dead in his store. The next day Lewis Patrick, a young black man, was detained because he had a piece of pork in his possession. He was arrested and taken to the county jail in Beaufort, North Carolina. On the night of June 14, 1899, he was taken from jail by a mob and out to a roadside, where he was shot to death, with his body left by the road for others to find.
