Appaloosa Gelding for Sale in Bonham, TX

When Diego arrived, it appeared that he had not been handled much prior to coming to BEHS. He was a bit shy, but he didn’t seem to be at all aggressive. His foster home worked with him, and she got him leading well, let her catch him, and let her pick up his front feet. Diego’s had some bad experiences in his life, so he’s not a trusting horse. He’s spent time with a professional trainer for ground work. He also spent time in early 2019 with a trainer to prepare for the Bluebonnet Rescue Horse Training Challenge. She pulled him out of the Challenge because he isn’t emotionally ready for a competition. She said some days she could work with him with no problems on the ground in the round pen, but other days he was terrified and would try to jump out. His current foster home has had him twice. She has started working with him again (August 2019) after letting hm have some months off to decompress. She said right now it can take a few minutes to catch him and he doesn’t like his ears touched, but she’s working on that. She says he is a high energy horse and does not take much pressure to get him to mve out. He needs a handler who is calm and uses the least pressure possible to get a reaction - he does not react well to people who push hard. His foster home said that he is also really eager to please, and he works well for praise. He’s going to need a very experienced and patient adopter who wants to spend time helping him work through whatever trauma he experienced in life that has made him so scared. He could also be adopted as a pet/companion horse and not trained to ride.

About Bonham, TX

One of Texas's oldest cities, Bonham dates to 1837, when Bailey Inglish built a two-story blockhouse named Fort Inglish about 2 miles (3 km) from the current downtown. Inglish and other acquaintances settled there in the summer of 1837, and the settlement was named "Bois D'Arc". The Congress of the Republic of Texas named the city Bloomington in 1843, but renamed it Bonham in honor of James Butler Bonham, a defender of the Alamo. On February 2, 1848, Bonham was incorporated as a city. A 1936 statue of Bonham by Texas sculptor Allie Tennant is on the courthouse grounds.
