Roy is a sweet, curious young gelding with a kind personality and all the potential to become an exceptional partner. He should mature around 16 hands and approximately 1,000 pounds. His dam stands 15.2 hands with a solid, sturdy build, and his sire was 15.1 hands, a true tank who consistently threw taller foals. Roy is expected to mature into a substantial, athletic horse with plenty of bone and substance. Roy is an observant thinker. He likes to take in his surroundings and occasionally appreciates a little reassurance when faced with something new. With a confident, consistent handler, he gains confidence quickly. If you’re looking for a horse that is highly responsive to subtle cues—whether for liberty work, trick training, or developing a true partnership—Roy has all the qualities to excel. He’s also a beautiful mover and is usually one of the first horses at the fence to greet visitors. As a foal, Roy had a rough start after developing both a hoof abscess and a severe melting eye ulcer—both environmental issues, not genetic. He spent time at Purdue University, where the veterinary team worked hard to save his eye. Those early experiences understandably made him a little cautious around people, but he has continued to improve as his interactions become positive and consistent. Today, he is much more trusting and continues to gain confidence. The only lingering quirk is that Roy still occasionally believes the farrier might be trying to steal one of his legs! With a patient farrier and someone there to reassure him, he stands well for trims, and I’m happy to share videos of his farrier work. His ophthalmologist initially expected some permanent vision shadows, but at his most recent examination, no scar tissue remained. Despite his early challenges, I have every confidence that Roy will make an outstanding trail, liberty, or all-around pleasure horse. He has already been introduced to a training bridle and saddle without concern, has been ponied on trails, and has confidently crossed creeks, logs, and other natural obstacles. I’ve even sat on him bareback once. He is truly a blank slate with an excellent foundation, ready to be finished in whatever direction you choose.
