Rory is a well-built, handsome, gaited Curly gelding registered with the American Bashkir Curly Registry. He’s 12 years old and stands at 15 hands. If you aren’t familiar with Curly horses, they are known for being kind, hearty horses that are hypoallergenic for most people. Rory is a true pleasure to have in my barn. He’s the gentle, quiet, happy, meet-you-at-the-gate, friendly pocket-pony everyone seeks. He’s happy in the barn or field and gets along well with everyone he meets – equine or human. His ground manners are excellent, and he makes working around him easy. Catching, tying, leading, grooming, picking feet, fly spraying, saddling – it’s all just so easy with Rory! Rory’s manners extend to riding as well. He stands like a gentleman for mounting and dismounting, moves off quietly even if he’s had some time off, and although not certified bomb-proof, he isn’t one to spook at silly things, either. Rory rides very well in an arena, open pasture, and on the trail. It’s fun to ride, but he’s on the slower side with a nice, medium-paced walk and a super smooth, slow, and medium gait. He’ll go in both an English and Western saddle, and we’ve been riding him in an endurance hybrid saddle. He’s responsive enough to ride in an egg but snaffle bit, but he’ll also ride just fine in a shanked bit with someone who has considerate hands. He’ll neck rein a bit, direct reins well, turns great off seat and leg, carries his neck beautifully, bends laterally in both directions and has a prompt “Whoa.” Rory’s temperament is in that rare and coveted balance between dead-head and spirited. He’s an uncomplicated ride, but he’s not boring. He’s sensitive enough to appreciate a balanced and thoughtful rider but quiet enough to forgive the mistakes of a beginner. He is sensitive enough to notice his surroundings but quiet enough not to overreact. You can provoke him to worry but you can also show him it’s okay and watch that sensible side take over. Rory’s solid in the arena and open pasture. On the trail, Rory has been amazing but could use some more quiet miles with a confident rider to get him really solid. We recommend him for an advanced beginner with supervision around the farm and an intermediate rider away from home. Since we welcomed Rory to our farm in December last year, we’ve ridden him at three different farms and one park with equestrian trails. He’s been consistent in the arena, happy to figure out obstacle courses, solid in the open fields, and quiet on the trails. He’s a rare gem in health/conformation, ground manners, and under saddle. He’s been ridden by children, men, and women and did well with all. He was purchased as a husband’s horse, but the husband decided he didn’t want to ride – otherwise, we’d keep him in the family for sure.
