                    About Sarasota, FL
                                 The area known today as Sarasota first appeared on a sheepskin Spanish map from 1763 with the word Zarazote over present day Sarasota and Bradenton. The municipal government of Sarasota was established when it was incorporated as a town in 1902. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 25.9 square miles (67 km 2), of which 14.9 sq mi (38.6 km 2) is land and 11.0 sq mi (28 km 2) is water. Sarasota has a humid subtropical climate closely bordering a tropical savanna climate, with hot, humid summers, and warm, dry winters. There are distinct rainy and dry seasons, with the rainy season lasting from June to September, and the dry season from October to May.
