Gaited Mare for Adoption

Chicago’s owner surrendered her to BEHS when he was investigated for neglect. When she arrived in December of 2011, wild and scared and untouchable. After handling her and working with her, it became evident that life had not been kind to this mare. Slowly, we worked to overcome her issues with humans and it turned out she was broke to ride and a fun little gaited mare. Chicago was adopted in 2013 but returned in 2014 because she and her adopter did not bond. Chicago was not catchable when she first came to BEHS and she did not want to be touched or handled. Her foster home has worked with her and took her to a training clinic in February where they worked on ground manners and navigating obstacles. She’s been ridden by two BEHS members under saddle, and she appears to have had some previous riding but little training. In June 2012, Chicago competed in the Chase the Equine Dream Competition and was one of the winners. In order to win, she had to negotiate several trail obstacles in an arena, and she performed wonderfully! Chicago has some emotional baggage, likely from previous bad handling, and she’s a very smart mare. She will need an adopter who is willing to invest time to work with her. She has been trail ridden a few times, and she will bolt and buck if confronted with something new that scares her. Once her rider helps her work over the fear of that item, it no longer bothers her. But because of her bolting, she won’t be suitable for a beginner or timid rider. Available for adoption (with contract) from Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society. No breeding or resales.
