About Arcadia, FL

James Joseph Richardson was an African-American migrant worker and resident of Arcadia who was convicted in 1968 for the 1967 murders of his seven children. On October 25, 1967, the Richardson children, ranging in ages two to eight, consumed a lunch poisoned with parathion. Six of the children died that day and the seventh child died the next day. At a trial in Fort Myers, Florida, an all-white jury found him guilty of murdering the children and sentenced him to death. As a result of the United States Supreme Court's 1972 Furman v.
