The City of Andrews is mainly known for its annual possum drop, where a wild possum is caught, suspended in a flexiglass cage above a crowd, and then dropped at the stroke of midnight to celebrate the New Year. The NC legislature suspended wildlife protection laws to allow this. The last possum, Millie, was seriously injured and had to have her leg amputated. She can never be returned to the wild. The area is rich in Native American history.
