About Canisteo, NY

Canisteo is the site of the largest living sign in the world, noted by both Ripley's Believe it or Not! and the Registry of Historical Places. [ citation needed ] It is 60 feet (18 m) by 400 feet (120 m), and consists of Scotch pine. The seeds for it were planted in 1934. The original activities in the town of Canisteo were farming and lumbering; the Canisteo River offered transportation for products. After arrival of the Erie Railroad in 1851, the Village of Canisteo was home to a variety of small manufacturers.
