About Excelsior, MN

Pre-Columbian Mound Builder societies lived in the area from 8000 BCE, following the recession of the Laurentide Ice Sheet, to about 1150 AD. Dakota peoples populated the area when the first European settlers arrived in the 1820s. Unfair treaties with the US government in the 1850s led to the Dakota War of 1862 and then the expulsion of the Dakotas. Excelsior was founded in 1853 by George Bertram and the Excelsior Pioneer Association. It was the first community established on Lake Minnetonka.
