When I met Wachi, it didn’t take long to decide she would be my next bridal horse. I had planned to spend my life with her, but alas, I have the pleasure of a diverse and successful life—not one that is fair to Wachi. If you love something, as they say, then let it go. I love this horse dearly. I will kindly request the opportunity to visit her. If you give her a pasture to live her life and space to be herself when she is called upon, you can trust her with your life, and you will from the first ride on. If she has confidence in you, she will give you trouble on purpose to keep you humble, as loved ones do. I have never had as much fun with a horse. Wachi has been on payrolls out west guiding, chasing cows, and even for a movie shoot (boring). In fact, we guided together in Utah only a few weeks after her first ride. Being a vaquero-style horseman, the last time she was in a round pen was on her first ride, and she has never been lunged or worked in an arena. Since her second ride down the endless alfalfa fields of Arizona, she has rated perfectly, as though we had been riding together for a decade. She has over five hundred miles under saddle. On the road, she has traveled from Arizona to Tennessee and up to Wisconsin, some 7,000 miles since her first time being ponied. We have had many pure and beautiful times together, alone in the wilderness with the deer and the birds. I usually let her wander around with her halter to graze and then hang her on the line at night, but I hobble her when I don’t feel like watching her—sometimes she gets that look in her eye, you know. I stopped sleeping next to her because she never stopped moving, and I never slept. She enjoys her job riding the ranges, and I’ve never met a horse that herds cows and horses quite like her. Her top speed so far is 35mph. She will carry herself at a nice 8-9mph trot for miles and can easily do a five-mile ride in under 30 minutes (terrain-depending, of course). For those who shoot, you can hobble her and unsling your rifle or stay mounted. It has been a while for her, so I recommend a little refresher before you go blastin’ away; and I shoot lever action .22s, things that won’t bust her ears. Hang a rope on ‘er and toss it away, don’t catch anything yet because we never got around to it. When I build fences and get lazy, I have her drag logs up and down steep hills. She is so fast and athletic that you can run circles around cattle until they drop dizzy. . As for technicals, you would insult Wachi if you even bothered to ask about side passing, pivots, diagonals, fore and hind, etc. The first clip of the riding video is from a year ago when Wachi had only been under saddle for five months. There is no footage of hind action or trotting diagonals (quite a few things), but just as you all can assume she can load and unload a trailer after 7,000 miles, it is safe to assume that is kindergarten for her as well. However, I don’t care about futurities and spinning my horses to death, so you’ll have to put another quarter in if you want more than a solid round. I am the only person that has ridden Wachi, and she has been ridden solely in halters and bosals. I would never use a bit on her unless you transition her to a bridle horse. If you want, I can make a Columbian bosal for you, which is better than a halter but less hassle than a traditional bosal. Wachi is sensitive and intelligent and has always responded to the lightest shifts and cues, even during a gallop. That is to say, aside from working on new concepts, I never touch her head and ride solely from the seat down. I could write about her all day, so please call with any questions.
