No matter what business you've chosen--training, trading, feed or tack store, boarding, breeding -- success requires you periodically evaluate your focus; believe it or not, what your business was last year may be different from what it will be this year.
Stop, look and listen. It's a new year; time to take a new look at your business.
Have you defined exactly what it is you want to do for your clients or customers? Are you giving 100 per cent effort to your chosen goal? Or could you be going in too many directions at once?
Businesses fail for lack of focus; trying to offer too many products and/or services to too many markets. It's easy to become distracted just trying to make a living. Stop for a few hours and review you're your product---what is it your customers are buying? Look closely at whom you think you are, and what you think you do best. See your goal clearly. Are you and your business "recognizable" or just "visible?"
Whether you've just started a business, or you've been in business for awhile, take a moment to evaluate your focus and ask yourself "What is it that I'm known for?" Ask friends, clients or customers to tell you what business they think you are in. Listen carefully. If your customers have difficulty being specific about what it is you do, then you are missing your target; you've lost focus.
To help you regain focus ask yourself: What do I do best? What do I enjoy most? What do I do that people need and appreciate? What is my greatest expertise? What am I already known for? What comes most naturally? What am I most eager to work at?
Concentration is the key to economic results.
You can't know all there is to know about a single breed of horse, let alone know all there is to know about 10 breeds. Nor can you know all there is to know about several facets of any business. Focus on a single product or a single service. Define that product or service in terms of your mission statement. Make that product or service unique to you. Now work consistently to learn more about your specific business than anyone else knows, and when you do, you'll soon be well-known, in demand and sought after.
You'll be focused, you'll be recognizable, and you'll be successful.
