USET Champion Heads List of Fair Hill International Combined Driving Competitors

FAIR HILL, MD-October 2, 2001-Five-time United States Equestrian Team (USET) pairs driving champion Lisa Singer of Chadds Ford, PA, heads an impressive list of drivers who have filed entries to compete in the 2001 Fair Hill International, October 25-28, at the Fair Hill Natural Resources Area in Fair Hill, MD.

Singer will be seeking to defend the Fair Hill pairs title she won last year. Singer, who has won two Jaguar Triple Crown of Driving titles (1996 and 1997), made history in 1997 when she became the first driver ever to sweep all three Triple Crown events in the same year. She is the only woman ever to win the USET Pairs Driving Championship, a feat she has now accomplished five times, including the last three years in a row.

Also entered to compete at Fair Hill is Nancy Johnson of Lincoln, MA, who won the Gladstone Driving Event's Gladstone Singles Championship, which served as a USET selection trial for the 2002 Singles World Championship to be held in Conty, France, in 2002. With her victory at Gladstone, Johnson is now the leader in the Jaguar Triple Crown of Driving, presented by Driving Essentials/Glinkowski Carriages, with a score of 226.48 points. She leads two-time Triple Crown Champion Lisa Singer who has 227.22 points. The finale of the Jaguar Triple Crown occurs at the Fair Hill International where the competition should be fierce.

Also returning to Fair Hill is USET veteran Gary Stover of Chesapeake City, MD, who will attempt to reclaim the USET Four-In-Hand Championship title he won in 1996. Singles driver Kimberly Stover of Warwick, MD has entered to drive in the Fair Hill International, following her victory in the first leg of the Jaguar Triple Crown at the Laurels Combined Driving Event in Unionville, PA.

Two more Gladstone Driving Event champions, Jack Wetzel of Aiken, SC, who took top honors in the Advanced Single Pony division, and A.J. Meyer, the winner in the Advanced Pair Pony division, both plan to compete at Fair Hill. Kate Shields is also entered and she will be trying to win her first Advanced Singles title at Fair Hill.

The Fair Hill International brings world-class equestrian competition in the Olympic sport of eventing and the World Championship sport of combined driving to the majestic Maryland countryside.

The event plays host to four exciting equestrian championships: the USET Fall Eventing Championship CCI***, the USET Four-In-Hand Driving Championship, the AHSA Single Horse Driving Championship and the AHSA National Combined Driving Pony Championships.

The driving championships awarded at the Fair Hill International are among the season's highlights for combined drivers. Last year Tucker Johnson, Oldwick, NJ, who last year won a record fourth straight four-in-hand title at Fair Hill, has entered seeking his fifth consecutive win. He'll face tough competition from a strong field, including Chester Weber of Ocala, FL, who took first place in the Advanced Four-in-Hand divisions at both the Basingstoke Combined Driving Event, Old Town, FL, and the Treasure Coast CDE, Fort Pierce, FL this year. Last year, Weber was named one of the Top Ten Drivers in the World by the international equestrian magazine L'Annee Hippique.

For novice equestrians, this year's Fair Hill International will also host the United States Combined Training Association (USCTA) Area II Preliminary, Training & Novice Horse Trials' Championships. These East Coast Championships include dressage on Thursday, cross-country on Friday, and show jumping on Saturday, all from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The Fair Hill International also features the new Equine Health Pavilion, sponsored by Cosequin. The Equine Health Pavilion will feature educational opportunities with experts from the New Bolton Center at The University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, Smartpak (custom packager of daily supplements for equine feed), and Pennfield Feed together with Kentucky Equine Research. Talks, demonstrations, and autograph sessions with international stars of eventing and combined driving will round out the opportunities in the Equine Health Pavilion.

The Fair Hill International gratefully acknowledges the support of its sponsors, without whom an event of this magnitude would not be possible, including Cosequin, the United States Equestrian Team, Banner Life Insurance, Bit of Britain, First Union Private Capital Management, Glenmede Trust, Jaguar, Nawpac, Outback Performance Wear with Gore-Tex Fabric by Outback Trading Company, Ltd., Pennfield Feeds, Practical Horseman, Scudder Financial Services, Southern States Cooperative, Supracor, Thornhill Enterprises, and Thoroughbred Charities of America, Ltd.
