BRIDGEHAMPTON, NY (August 28, 2001) - With just over 2 tenths of a second
separating them, rider McLain Ward of Brewster, NY, and his 8-year-old
French gelding Quinn edged out Aaron Vale of Camden, SC, riding Lady Miss in
the Lalique Open Jumper (Low) Class at the 26th Annual Hampton Classic Horse
Show.
The Lalique Open Jumper Class is a converted speed class for up-and-coming
show jumpers, where knockdowns are scored as time faults instead of
penalties. Many riders and trainers use the class as a warm-up for the FEI
World Cup Qualifyer, which will be held Friday, Aug. 31, at The Hampton
Classic.
"This horse is actually an intermediate horse who is just moving up to the
open jumpers, so we are quite happy today with him today," said Ward, who
has been competing at The Hampton Classic for about 19 years. "This class is
actually a little farther along in his development, and we are excited for
him to be a player."
Quinn, who is entered in the $25,000 Sally Hansen Grand Prix on Saturday,
Sept.1 at The Hampton Classic, had the fastest score of the 98 entries in
the class. Ward also took fifth place on Cameo, an 11-year-old Dutch mare.
Further results of the class:
3rd: Diams III, ridden by Joe Fargis
4th: Carousel, ridden by Ramiro Quintana
5th: Cameo, ridden by McLain Ward
6th: Siempre, ridden by Beezie Madden
7th: Geez Loueez, ridden by Todd Minikus
8th: Gotier Mancier, ridden by Eric Lamaze
9th: Chica Bay, ridden by Paige Rassas
