LAKE PLACID, NEW YORK-Emily Harris rode Queen to victory in the North
American League (NAL) Adult Jumper Classic Sunday to close the 24th annual I
Love New York Horse Show.
Harris was one of 19 entries from the starting field of 55 to reach a
tiebreaking jump-off by riding without penalty over the 16-jump, first-round
course at the North Elba Show Grounds. She was the 11th to return for the
seven-jump tiebreaker course and she claimed the win with a fault-free ride

Second place went to John Pigott of Katonah, NY who finished the jump-off
clean in 36.198 seconds on Casper and third went to Nancy Hooker of
Wellington, FL who was fault-free in 37.669 seconds on Kaiser.
The NAL is a year-long series of competitions held in six divisions: Adult
and Children’s Jumper, Adult and Children’s Hunter, Pony Jumper and Open
Jumper Speed.
The NAL hosts year-end finals at the Pennsylvania National Horse Show in
Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in October as well as five regional events. The
following shows have been designated as NAL Regional Shows for 2001: the
Vermont Summer Festival (Sugarbush Horse Show) - August 1-5, Waitsfield, VT
for zone 1; the Quentin Riding Club Fall Horse Show - August 30-Sept 3,
Quentin, PA for zone 2; the Biltmore Summer Classic II - July 18-22,
Asheville, NC for zone 3; the Chateau Elan Summer Horse Show - August 24-26,
Braselton, GA for zone 4 and the Blue Grass Festival - August 15-19, 2001
Lexington, KY for zone 5.
The 2001 Lake Placid and I Love New York Horse Shows saw history made by
U.S. Olympic veteran Margie Goldstein Engle of Wellington, FL as she joined
Leslie Burr Howard and Debbie Dolan Sweeney as the only riders to sweep Lake
Placid’s two Grandprix events in one year. Engle won the $50,000 Budweiser
Garndprix of Lake Placid for the Whitney Perpetual Challenge Trophy on her
2000 Sydney Olympic mount, Hidden Creek’s Perin on Wednesday, July 4. Three
days later, she won the horse shows’ other Grandprix, the $50,000 Supracor I
Love New York Grandprix, on Reggae, the same horse on which she had won that
Grandprix in 1999. Her two Grandprix wins easily made Engle the winner of
this year’s Martin Stone Award as the leading Grandprix rider at the Lake
Placid and I Love New York Horse Shows.
Winning the horse shows’ Jimmy Quinn Award as the leading amateur-owner
rider of the two shows was Danielle Torano of Fort Lauderdale, FL who won
the $20,000 Mirror Lake Inn/Pin Oak Farm Amateur-Owner Grandprix on Lojana.
Heather and Charlie Hooker of Wellington, FL and their dog, Dottie, a
five-year-old Jack Russell Terrier, won the horse shows’ ninth annual Doggie
Costume Contest, sponsored by Lonesome Landing of Saranac Lake and the Brown
Dog Deli and Wine Bar of Lake Placid. They won for the second straight
year. Their costume was “Hurry Home Cinderella”.
The horse shows’ annual Window Decorating Contest was won by the Adirondack
Trading Company. The Market and Reflections Antiques tied for second and
Ben & Jerry’s was third.
