With Steeplechase Horse-of-the-Year honors for 2000 still very much up in the
air, 22 horses have been nominated to the Grade I Breeders' Cup Steeplechase,
to be run Saturday, October 28th in Far Hills, New Jersey. The field will be
limited to 14 starters, with first preference given to Breeders' Cup eligible
horses, and second preference to horses with the highest career earnings over
fences.
The National Steeplechase Association has sanctioned five previous Grade I
steeplechase races so far this year, and each Grade I race has been won by a
different horse: Invest West won the Colonial Cup, All Gong (GB) won the
Atlanta Cup, Flat Top won the Royal Chase, Pinkie Swear won the Iroquois, and
Ninepins (GB) won the New York Turf Writer's Cup. All of those Grade I
winners have nominated to the Breeders' Cup except Pinkie Swear, who is
recovering from an injury.
