Lake Placid, NY—July 8, 2004—Callan Solem of Colt's Neck, NJ rode
Warsaw to
victory in the Wild Horse Winery North American League (NAL) Open Speed
Stake Thursday at the 27th annual I Love New York Horse Show in Lake Placid.
Kate Levy of Katonah, NY had taken an early lead in the class when she rode
Sampson to a time of 55.071 seconds over the 12-jump, one-round course at
the North Elba Showgrounds. Levy's lead held until Solem, the 25th of 33
entries, beat her time by finishing in 54.643 seconds.
None of the remaining entries could catch Solem, who placed third in last
week-end's $50,000 Budweiser Grandprix of Lake Placid. One rider, however,
Margie Engle of Wellington, FL, the day's sixth-to-last entry, did actually
beat Solem's time, finishing in 52.350 seconds. However, her mount, Hidden
Creek's Charlie Brown, lowered a rail at the fourth-to-last fence adding
four penalty seconds to their time. The adjusted score of 56.350 dropped
Engle, who this Saturday will seek an unprecedented fourth consecutive win
in the $50,000 Hermes I Love New York Grandprix, to fourth place behind
Solem, Levy and the third place finisher, Lauren Bass of Gates Mills, OH who
had a time of 55.248 seconds on Lionel.
The Wild Horse Winery NAL Open Speed Stake is part of the year-long North
American League (NAL) series that features separate series in six hunter and
jumper divisions – Children's Hunter, Children's Jumper, Adult Hunter, Adult
Jumper, Pony Jumper, and Open Jumper Speed. Each series culminates with a
championship final at the Pennsylvania National Horse Show in Harrisburg,
PA, in October. Riders need not be members of the NAL to compete in any
qualifying classes, but only current members earn points toward year-end
finals. For more information and a list of qualifying competitions for
2004, please visit the Ryegate Show Services website at www.Ryegate.com.
The I Love New York Horse Show continues through Sunday, July 11. The main
event is the $50,000 Hermes I Love New York Grandprix on Saturday, July 10.
Other special features include Show Jumping Hall of Fame Jumper Classic
series events for junior and amateur-owner riders. The Shamrock Ventures
LLC High Junior Jumper Classic and the Charlotte Bobcats $10,000
Amateur-Owner Jumper Classic take place on Saturday, July 10. The standings
on the Show Jumping Hall of Fame Jumper Classic Series help determine which
junior riders and which amateur-owner riders will qualify to ride in the
2004 National Horse Show in Wellington, FL, in November.
Also featured on Saturday is the horse show's 12th annual Doggie Costume
Contest, sponsored by the Lonesome Landing Garden Center of Saranac Lake and

contest and participants can sign up right on the show grounds. All people
with leashed dogs in costume will be admitted to the horse show at no charge
and all contestants receive prizes. The Doggie Costume Contest begins at
