Following the conclusion of cross country phase in both the CCI* and the CCI** at the Galway Downs Event, the leaders after dressage remained in the top spot. Debbie Rosen and Gringosch are making their first CCI** outing memorable. “This is the best round I have ever had on him,” commented Rosen of her 17 hand gelding. “He has a really big stride so I worked on control issues prior to the event. We practiced a lot of narrow (jumps),” commented Rosen emphasizing the “lot.”

Rosen has a 5.6 point lead over second place rider Lauren Whitlock and Kipling. Whitlock, in moving up to second, assumes the lead in the Young Rider category for the prestigious Fritz Cup. Jolie Sexson led the contest for the Fritz Cup after dressage, but a withdrawal in the cross country phase halted her bid for this important honor sought by young riders between the ages of 16 and 21.

Barbara Crabo maintained her lead in the CCI* with Groovy. Because of the pair’s strong dressage score of 42.4, over six points ahead of the second place pair, Crabo could afford the two time penalties she accrued with her cautious ride around the cross country course. Josh Barnacle, a junior rider, held on to second place with only his dressage score of 48.69. Barnacle and Florestan du Serin compete under the watchful eye of trainer Yves and Christine Sauvignon of Santa Rosa, CA. Barnacle toured France with his trainers in search of the perfect horse. Out of the fifteen horses they looked they settled on Florestan du Serin.

Rounding out the top three in the CCI* is Lynd Pugh and Zillion Dayna. They also maintained just their dressage score of 50.95 after the cross country phase. “He is a strong horse,” said Pugh of Zillion Dayna “and he drug me around the steeplechase. I was a bit worried about cross country, but after going over the first fence I knew it was going to be a great ride.” The pair earned only a 1.6 time penalty for a revised score of 50.95.

Stadium jumping concludes the Galway Downs Eventing CCI* and CCI** tomorrow. Fortunes can change quickly with penalties accruing for each jump rail knocked down during the course.

Jaguar and the Riverside Press Enterprise are proud sponsors of the 2002 Galway Downs Three Day Event. For more information and directions, go to www.galwaydowns.com or call (909) 676-4545.
