Wolff And Beudelair Top John H. Fritz Challenge

AUGUSTA, NJ—May 30, 2002—A field of 27 entries competed in the John H. Fritz Challenge at the 2002 Garden State Horse Show held May 1-5 at the Sussex County Fairgrounds in Augusta, NJ. The John H. Fritz Perpetual Trophy was presented to Ali Wolff and her horse Beudelair.

The class, introduced in 2001, was designed for junior and amateur riders who compete over fences 3’–3’3” in height. It was held following the conclusion of the Garden State Grand Prix. The perpetual trophy was donated last year by Mr. and Mrs. Finn M.W. Caspersen in honor of John H. (Jack) Fritz.

Fritz has played a key role in nearly every aspect of the equestrian world. From founding organizations such as the United States Combined Training Association (USCTA) and the United States Dressage Foundation (USDF), to governing and officiating equestrian events, Fritz has dedicated his life to promoting equestrian sports.

Fritz has also been a leader of the U.S. Equestrian Team (USET) for nearly three decades. He has been a member of the USET’s Board of Directors since the early 1960s and an officer since 1974. Today Fritz continues to judge and officiate many three-day events and dressage shows, and has authored a number of books in horse sports.

This year the riders competed over a course designed by Anthony D’Ambrosio and consisted of 16 fences with a time allowed of 80 seconds. Wolff was the second rider to finish with a clean round and move to the jump-off. In total, sixteen horse-and-rider combinations kept the rails off the ground and had the opportunity to have their names inscribed on the John H. Fritz Perpetual Trophy. But it was Wolff and Beudelair who turned in the fastest fault-free ride in the jump-off will have their winning efforts remembered. Last year, Leigh Healey and her mount Ideal from Glenayre Farm of Mt. Holly, NJ, took home top honors. This year, Glenayre Farm’s Concorde was ridden to a second-place finish with Maria Schaub aboard. Schaub and Concorde also went on the following day to win the $1500 Marshall & Sterling Children’s Jumper class sponsored by Stillwell-Hansen.
