Bridgehampton, NY - September 3, 2004 - Brianne Goutal of New York, NY,
topped a field of 43 entries to claim the $10,000 Junior/Amateur-Owner
Show Jumping Derby Welcome Stake on Friday, September 3, at the 29th
Hampton Classic Horse Show in Bridgehampton, NY.
Riding Onira, Goutal jumped fault-free in a time of 78.53 seconds to
claim victory over her opponents in a class consisting of junior riders
aged 18 and under as well as amateur riders. Addison Phillips, 15, of
New York, NY, was her closest challenger, finishing in the top 12 with
three horses including Rastella, a 14-year-old brown mare, who carried
her to a second-place finish in a time of 80.29 seconds.
David Tromp, 18, of North Salem, NY, earned third position with a time
of 80.39 seconds riding Calvin while Paige Johnson of The Plains, VA,
was fourth riding Landria W.
The $10,000 Junior/Amateur-Owner Show Jumping Derby Welcome Stake acted
as a qualifier for Sunday's $25,000 Calvin Klein Jeans Show Jumping
Derby, with the top 30 horse-rider combinations earning the right to
compete on the grass Grand Prix field on 'Grand Prix Sunday'.
"The course was challenging and had a lot of natural obstacles like the
bank and the open water," noted Goutal, 15,a grade 10 student. "It was
spooky and you had to have a really good horse. Last year, I rode Onira
in the Calvin Klein Jeans Equitation Championship where we finished
second, so I knew he was good with the bank. It's all the horse, he is
spectacular."
Goutal trains with Frank and Stacia Madden of Colts Neck, NJ, as well as
Max Amaya of Monmouth Beach, NJ.
"He sleeps all day, but he is very kind, really friendly and playful,"
said Goutal of the eight-year-old bay Dutch Warmblood gelding she has
been riding for just over a year.
Goutal has been unstoppable at this year's Hampton Classic Horse Show
winning the USET/BET Section 'B' and the National Junior PHA Medal
riding Logan, a nine-year-old bay gelding. On Thursday, Goutal was also
awarded the Low Junior Jumper 1.30m Championship title. Goutal and
Onira will be hoping for a repeat performance on Sunday when they
compete in the $25,000 Calvin Klein Jeans Show Jumping Derby.
Each year the Hampton Classic Horse Show attracts more than 50,000
spectators and celebrities to watch the country's best horses and riders
compete. One of the nation's premier show jumping competitions, the
Hampton Classic boasts jam-packed social events and equestrian
competitions from August 29 to September 5, culminating with Sunday's
$150,000 Prudential Financial Grand Prix. With boutiques, on-site
restaurants and a wide variety of displays and activities, there is fun
for the whole family.
Admission is $10 per person or $20 per carload, with children under six
