Wayne, IL - June 22, 2008 - It was a great final day at the
2008 Wachovia Showplace Spring Spectacular II Horse Show, and three big prize
money classes were on the schedule. The winner of the $10,000 Wachovia
Securities Low Junior/Amateur Jumper Classic was Alexandra Morefield of Elburn, IL,
on Sir Hawkins. Haley Waters and Rocky tallied their second big win of the week
when they took the top prize in the $20,000 Tapestry Farms Children's/Adult
Jumper Classic. The winner of the $10,000 Turtle Rock Farms High Junior/Amateur
Jumper Classic was Victoria Birdsall of Topsfield,
MA, on Jerremy.
The courses were designed by Hector Loyola of Puerto Rico,
and huge crowds gathered today to watch the final classes of this successful
event. Sixteen-year-old Alexandra Morefield and her 7-year-old Warmblood
gelding Sir Hawkins were able to race fastest through the jump-off course in
the $10,000 Wachovia Securities Low Junior/Amateur Jumper Classic. They
finished just in front of Laura King-Kaplan on Crocket 16.
Morefield trains with Steve Schaefer of Grove
Place, and she has been competing
for 10 years. She noted that riding Sir Hawkins is "like riding a powerhouse;
it's so cool. He's a really, really good boy." She said that she watched the
earlier jump-off rides in order to make her plan for the course. "I was
watching to see what turns they did and what strides they did because my horse
has a really big stride. I can leave a lot out. He was amazing. We flew! I
planned to leave out strides and we did," she explained.
Haley Waters and Rocky, a horse she has been riding in the
jumpers for a year, won their second classic of the week, and this time they
received a big paycheck in the $20,000 Tapestry Farms Children's/Adult Jumper
Classic. Waters said that since she started with Rocky, she has "learned how to
ride him better. He's taught me a lot; he's taught me how to ride. He's helped
me learn to like him too."
Waters had an original plan in the jump-off to do two
outside turns that had options of an inside cut to the jump, but as she headed
to the second to last jump on course, she changed her mind. "I was supposed to
go around, but I saw the other way, so I didn't," she pointed out. Heading to
the last jump, she thought, "I gotta kick!" This forward thinking led Waters to
post the fastest time in the timed round and take the win over Reagan and Megan
Bryant.
The last class of the day was the $10,000 Turtle Rock Farm
High Junior/Amateur Jumper Classic, and the second horse in for the jump-off
took home the top prize. Victoria Birdsall and Jerremy were fastest, while Reed
Kessler on Flight captured second place.
Fifteen-year-old Birdsall has leased Jerremy, a very
successful junior/amateur horse owned by Natalie Johnson, for a nine months.
This was their first big classic win. For today's class, Birdsall said she
"really wanted to win," but that she "wasn't sure because (other riders in the
class) are really fast. The first jump I was kind of slow, so I knew I had to
pick it up. After that, I just kind of trusted him and let him do his thing. I
helped him where I could," she said.
This marks the final day of the 2008 Wachovia Showplace
Spring Spectacular II Horse Show, which was a huge success and brought the
level of equestrian competition even higher this year in the Midwest.
