Wayne, IL - June 19, 2008 - At the Wachovia
Showplace Spring Spectacular II today, the top riders competed in the $10,000
Open Jumper Welcome Stake, sponsored by Canterbury Farms. New York City's Addison Phillips and
Cernunnus von Hof were the fastest in the jump-off for victory. Today's
highlight class was a great opener for the Open Jumpers, whose biggest class,
the $50,000 Wachovia Securities Grand Prix, is on Saturday, June 21, at 3:30
p.m.
Today's course was designed by Hector Loyola of Puerto Rico.
The class was a Time First Jump-off format, with the option to advance straight
to the jump-off or wait until the end of the class. Out of the 23 entries in
the class, 11 were clear in the first round. Most chose to do their jump-off
right away, but two waited until the first round was over. The fastest
four-faulter was Charlie Jayne on Boxter, owned by Alex Jayne, who finished the
first round in 70.698 seconds for 12th place.
The first to go clear was Phillips on her first mount,
Trezebees. In the jump-off, they had a rail and three time faults, with a
finish time of 54.181 seconds. Immediately after her was her barnmate, Maggie
MacAlary, on Euro Mon Ami. They advanced to the jump-off and took the early
lead, finishing clear in 45.252 seconds. MacAlary made a great inside turn
after jump 14 to shave time off, which most of the other riders would attempt
after her.
The lead changed hands four horses later with Kate Reuter
riding On Line. They were very fast through the turns and stopped the timers in
43.547 seconds to take the lead. Nick Novak and YB Blue had a chance at the win
a few horses later when they blazed through the jump-off in 42.765 seconds, but
a rail at the second to last jump relegated them to 10th place.
Kirsten Coe and Laura King-Kaplan's flashy chestnut
Starlight took the lead next when they executed a clear, neat round in 43.110
seconds, but it was Phillips who entered the ring next with Cernunnus von Hof.
Phillips and her horse, who she described as "very fast," blazed around the
course with the quickest time of the day and left all the jumps up in 42.625
seconds.
Phillips has owned the 11-year-old gelding for almost a
year, and they have moved up to the grand prix ranks quickly. Phillips just
finished her first year at Harvard
University, where horses
took a backseat to school. She had not shown regularly since April, so this
week's Welcome Stake was a good class to prepare for the grand prix on
Saturday. "I haven't really been riding that much, so it was nice to have a
little bit lower class before the grand prix," she confirmed. "It was my first
year at school, so I was kind of figuring out how to balance it. I'm pretty
rusty, so it was nice to do well. It was mostly him!"
After seeing Coe in the jump-off, Phillips followed her plan
and it led her to the blue ribbon. "My horse was faster in the air. Her round
was smoother and quicker probably, but my horse is really quick. I got lucky,"
she said. "He's a really quick horse, so when he goes clear it's fun."
The jumpers continue tomorrow with a schedule full of
special classes including: the $1,500 WIHS Children's Jumper Classic sponsored
by Northern Pines and the Leelanau School, the $1,500 WIHS Adult Jumper
Classic, the $5,000 Low Junior/Amateur Jumper Gambler's Choice, the $5,000 High
Junior/Amateur Jumper Gambler's Choice, and the $5,000 Gentleman's Invitational
with exhibitor party sponsored by True North Farm.
