Devon, PA - May 29, 2008 - Jennifer
Alfano of SBS Farms repeated last year's championship performance at the 2008
Devon Horse Show. This year, she and Jersey Boy, a six-year-old gelding owned
by SBS Farms, took the championship in the Second Year Green Working Hunter division.
In his first class ever at Devon,
Jersey Boy walked into the ring on Sunday night to compete in the $10,000
ASG/USHJA International Hunter Derby. The class was held later at night under
the lights and there was a huge crowd there to watch. Jersey Boy's inexperience
in the ring at Devon did not matter, as he
galloped to second place after two rounds. There were 20 of the best hunters in
the nation in the prestigious class.
"He exceeded my expectations," Alfano said of the talented
young horse. "I was a little nervous about him with the lights and the crowd. I
thought it might be a little too much for him, but he didn't seem to be
bothered by any of it. His second round was unbelievable."
Jersey Boy was first and second in the classes on Tuesday in
the Second Year Green Hunters. He won the stake class, which gave him the
championship in the division. Alfano won the same division last year at Devon with Rock Star, owned by Bright Star 158 LLC.
Jersey Boy also competed in the Regular Working Hunters and
nearly brought home another tricolor. They were second and third in the first
two jumping classes, second in the handy class, and third in the stake class.
On the last day of competition, Alfano said, "He was
definitely tired, but he tried every time he walked into the ring."
Alfano and owner Susie Schoellkopf of SBS Farms found Jersey
Boy a little over a year ago from Louise Serio. At first, Jersey Boy competed
in the jumpers, but Alfano found that the hunter classes were easy for him
"because he wants to be slow." She added, "It was not a hard transition."
The gelding's success at Devon has made him a great addition
to Alfano's string of top hunters, which include Rock Star and Sting, who
picked up top ribbons at Devon and huge wins
this year, and The Specialist, who finished third in the First Year Green
Hunter Stake class. She said of Jersey Boy, "At first, it was hard to get his
focus, but now we're seeing a big improvement. He kept his focus and
consistency this entire show. He's an incredible talent and has an amazing
stride and scope."
Schoellkopf added, "We're keeping Jersey Boy for Jen to show
and back up Rock Star. Jersey Boy was the talk of the horse show, and he was so
much fun to watch this week."
SBS Farms will compete next at the HITS on the Hudson II
Horse Show on June 4-8, 2008.
