Jennifer Waxman Clinches $25,000 Calvin Klein Show Jumping Derby, Racks Up Awards at Hampton Classic Horse Show

Jennifer Waxman Clinches $25,000 Calvin Klein Show Jumping Derby, Racks Up Awards at Hampton Classic Horse Show Bridgehampton, NY-August 31, 2008-Jennifer Waxman, 16, of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, won Sunday's $25,000 Calvin Klein Show Jumping Derby at the Hampton Classic Horse Show.

Waxman won aboard Outline in a timed jump-off against five other riders, swooping over the final course in 34.385 seconds. They were followed by Addison Phillips of New York City on Teirra (36.051) in second place and Hungarian Henri Kovaks, who is based in Middleburg, Va., finishing third with G-5 (36.291). All three went double-clear.

One of the nation's premier show jumping competitions, the Hampton Classic concludes Sunday, August 31. The Classic hosts hunter/jumper competition for riders ranging from the youngest competitors in Leadline and Short Stirrup classes all the way up to Olympic veterans in the $200,000 FTI Grand Prix. Show entries include two Olympic riders who flew in directly from the Olympic show jumping competition in Hong Kong: McLain Ward, a member of the gold medal-winning U.S. team, and individual gold medalist Eric Lamaze of Canada.

Waxman had a remarkable week at the Hampton Classic and showed the field of 30 competitors in the Calvin Klein Show Jumping Derby how it's done. She piloted Outline, who has a long, ground-covering stride, handily over the six obstacles in the Jumping Derby jump-off. Waxman positioned the horse perfectly on the approach to the Wolffer Estate oxer, which came off a hairpin turn from a vertical, and then kicked on to a tricky combination. That series of fences was the undoing of several of her competitors, some of whom had a refusal or rails down.

While Waxman darted off for two more rides in another class immediately after her win, her trainer, Emily Smith of Wellington, Fla., explained her win. "Jen really followed the plan," she said. "The horse has a big stride, and she stuck to riding him exactly the way we planned."

Smith, who has been training Waxman for eight years, said they were "very pleased with this year's progress." Aboard Falcon, Waxman won both the Hunter Phase and the Grand Championship of the WIHS International Equitation competition at this year's Hampton Classic.

After the Calvin Klein Show Jumping Derby concluded, Kelly Klein presented the show's Calvin Klein Awards. In addition to the presentation to Waxman as Junior Jumper Champion, the Amateur/Owner High Championship was awarded to Phillips, who rode Teirra to earn the most money in their 1.40m classes. The Shalanno Farms Trophy for Best Junior Jumper Rider went to Victoria Birdsall of Topsfield, Mass.

While the $25,000 Calvin Klein Show Jumping Derby was in progress in the Grand Prix ring, the $10,000 Hermes Hunter Classic proceeded in the Main Hunter ring. Samantha Schaeffer of Westminster, Md., won aboard Perfectionist, owned by Scott Stewart. After $10,000 Hermes Hunter Classic concluded, the Hampton Classic presented the Grand Hunter Championship award to Sambalino and rider Ken Berkeley of Wellington, Fla. Waxman was back in the ring to accept the Best Junior Rider Award. The Best Junior Equitation Rider Award went to Jessica Springsteen. The Antares Best Style of Riding Award in the Jumper Division was presented to McLain Ward and the Peconic Award for the Best Hunter Rider went to Patricia Griffiths.

With more than $500,000 in prize money, 50,000 spectators and nearly 1,800 horses, the Hampton Classic is not only a sporting event of major proportions, but also one of the most noteworthy social events of the Hamptons' summer season. The Classic's featured event, Sunday's $200,000 FTI Grand Prix and FEI World Cup(TM) Qualifier, concludes the eight-day show. Those unable to attend the Hampton Classic have an opportunity to see it on television.

WVVH-TV, the official Long Island television station of the Hampton Classic, is broadcasting up to five hours of competition and highlights each day during the Classic. These broadcasts can also be seen online at www.wvvh.tv. The $200,000 FTI Grand Prix will also air on Animal Planet on Saturday, October 4 at 3:00 pm (ET/PT).

The Classic has also received extensive coverage on WLIU 88.3 FM, a long-time sponsor and the official radio station of the Hampton Classic. WLIU has been broadcasting updates daily throughout the Classic to go along with live weekend programs from the show. Friday's live broadcast was anchored by WLIU's midday host, Brian Cosgrove, with weekend broadcasts anchored by Bonnie Grice and Porter Bibb.

The 2009 Hampton Classic will be held one week earlier than usual. Rather than culminating on Labor Day weekend, the 34th annual Hampton Classic will open on Sunday, August 23 and conclude on Sunday, August 30. The Classic will return to its traditional dates in 2010.
