Wellington, FL - February 28, 2007 - Peter Leone of Greenwich, Connecticut posted the first win of week number six of the 2007 Winter Equestrian Festival, racing to a nearly wire to wire victory in the $8,000 1.45m Jumpers. Week six of the ten week long festival, the Zada Enterprises, LLC Wellington Masters, is underway at the Palm Beach Polo Equestrian Club in Wellington, Florida.

The class scoring was Table II, Sec. 1 - Time First Round. The 2008 Olympic Course Designer for Beijing, Leopoldo Palacios of Caracas, Venezuela, is designing the tests for this week's Internationale Arena competitors.

In today's main event, fifty starters lined up for the 8 a.m. start. Of the fifty, twenty horse and rider combinations went fault-free over the speed course, while one had a single time fault, and another eighteen riders had a single knockdown.

Riding out of the fourth spot in the order, Peter Leone posted a pace that wouldn't be caught throughout the balance of the class. Leone, aboard the big strided Julia Du Brio, whipped around the speed track in a relentless 58.087 seconds. The only one to come close to Leone was Great Britain's Robert Smith on Gerry Maguire. Smith clocked in 58.644 seconds, 5/10ths of a second off the lead time.

Joe Fargis and his veteran partner Edgar 12 slotted into the third spot on Wednesday, tripping the timers in 59.230 seconds. Chris Kappler and VDL Maseratie were 1.2 seconds behind Fargis in fourth place. Kappler crossed the finish line in 60.458 seconds.

Rounding out the top six in today's 1.45m Jumpers were Jay Hayes of Canada aboard Livarot HB followed by Lauren Hough and Rodos. Only 6/1000ths of a second separated this duo as Hayes posted a finish time of 61.573 seconds, while Hough clocked in just behind at 61.579 seconds.

Leone wasn't shocked that his early time was fast enough for today's victory. "She's very fast mare with a huge stride. She got a lot of blood from her father's side," he said. "I know she's so fast, so I wasn't really surprised that she won or her time held up for the win, despite going so early in the class. I'm just very glad it did."

Leone talked about his partner Julia Du Brio, a 10 year-old French mare and a granddaughter of the great Jalisco. "She arrived here in December of 05 and began showing down here last year with her owner Alexia Simonnard. Alexia went off to college and I'm lucky enough to have the ride on her," detailed Leone. "She has always, always produced. She was third at Devon, her first time out of the gate with me. She won the Derby at Beacon Hill, and the Derby at the Hampton Classic."

Leone then spoke of what Leopoldo Palacios brings to the table as this week's course designer. "They are thinking courses. They are careful courses,' he said. "They reward experienced riders and the well prepared horse, and on his courses you horse has to be careful. He's a super course designer and you don't see too many fluky results when Leopoldo is designing. The good horses normally win when he's the designer."

Palacios will set the stage for tomorrow's featured event, Round VI of the $25,000 WEF Challenge Cup Series, set for a 1 p.m. liftoff at the Internationale Arena.
