Moreland Hills, OH- Canadian Olympic veteran Mario Deslauriers of Bromont, Quebec claimed victory at the $100,000 Wachovia Securities American Gold Cup at the Cleveland Metroparks Polo Field in Moreland Hills, Ohio, September 23. The event was the finale to the very successful five-day Wachovia Securities American Gold Cup.

Out of a starting lineup of 25 riders, Deslauriers was second to last in the order of go, as well as the first and only rider to post a clear round aboard his winning mount, Paradigm, his Belgian warmblood gelding. "With no other riders going clean, my focus was obvious," said Deslauriers. Knowing a clean ride within the time allowed would put him in the lead with only one rider left to enter the ring, he set his sights on a clean round within the time-allowed.

Two-time U.S. Olympic Team Silver Medalist (1988 and 1996) Anne Kursinski of Flemington, N.J., piloted Market Street's Lorenzo to claim second place. Although she had no jumping penalties in her expertly ridden round, she did pick up one time fault for being a second over the time allowed. Kursinski is a four-time winner of the American Gold Cup. Twenty-one year-old Charlie Jayne of Elgin, Illinois finished third aboard Alex R. Jayne's Urbanus.

The Wachovia Securities American Gold Cup was also host to one of a series of qualifying classes for the international FEI World CupT Show Jumping Finals.
