AACHEN, Germany - May 21 - Germany's Marcus Ehning continued his "amazing"
string of victories to ride his nine-year-old mare Nolte's Kuchengirl to
first place in the $300,000 Aachen Grand Prix Sunday. Outright jubilation at
the German's win two days after claiming the Samsung Super League was
tempered by a fall by Margie Engle of the United States on Hidden Creek's
Perin.
The two-round Grand Prix was won by Marcus Ehning in a jump-off on the
nine-year-old mare, Nolte's Kuchengirl, who took home first prize of almost
$100,000. Herve Godignon of France on Obelix was second, and Eric Lamaze of
Canada on Hickstead was third. After the competition, Ehning said he found
his success "amazing," claiming the World Cup Final in Malaysia three weeks
ago, winning the Grand Prix at LaBaule, and Aachen, and being on the team
that won both Super League contests.
Engle of Wellington, Fla. was taken to the hospital where she was reported
as having suffered a concussion and a cut lip, but was recovering. Her
husband, Dr. Steve Engle, is an equine chiropractor and accompanied his wife
during a jumping tour that took her to the World Cup Final in Malaysia and
to Europe as a member of the top United States show jumping squad. He was in
the crowd of 40,000 spectators watching the final competition of the World
Equestrian Festival.
Perin appeared to stumble in between jumps. He tried to continue to jump as
Engle came off, crashing through the third jump of the obstacle. It looked
to the crowd as if the horse trod on Engle, and she lay on the ground for
about a minute. Dr. Engle, U.S. Chef d' Equipe George Morris, and one of her
teammates, Lauren Hough, also of Wellington, Fla., rushed onto the grass
field.
The crowd erupted in applause when Engle declined help from medics and
walked off the field with Hough putting an arm around her
shoulder. Remarkably, reports from the hospital after an initial examination
and x-rays indicated no broken bones or other series injuries. Engle took
the same horse to the Sydney 2000 Olympics, but missed out on winning a spot
on the Athens 2004 Games because of a broken femur caused in another riding
accident. She is still scheduled to go to Rome this week where the U.S. will
participate in the third of the eight-event Samsung Super League
competitions.
She rode in the first two Super League competitions, at LaBaule, France, two
weeks ago and here in Aachen last Friday, in which the United States came
second to Germany in each contest. Engle's success -- she is a nine-time
American Grand Prix Association Rider of the Year, including in 2005 -- was
typified by her qualifying two horses to represent the United States in the
Samsung Super League, the premier series of jumping in the world and which
the United States won in 2005.
In the final dressage competition, Nadine Capellman of Germany won the
musical freestyle to sweep the hat trick after riding to victory in the
Grand Prix and Grand Prix Special on her 10-year-old gelding Elvis VA. The
music was, naturally, a medley of Elvis Presley vocal hits that was all the
more remarkable in that Capellman rode in the face of tradition that frowns
on the use of vocals in the musical accompaniment. Her score was 80.850
percent. Kyra Kyrklund on Max, a Finn riding as an individual, finished
second with 80.150, while Andreas Helgstrand on Blue Hors Don Schufro was
third with 79.225 percent.
In the final of the four-in-hand driving Nation's Cup competition, the United States team of Tucker Johnson of Hobe Sound, Fla., Chester Weber of Ocala, Fla., and Jim Richards of Atlanta, Ga., finished in sixth place.
