The Legacy Cup is an Event Whose Time Has Come
The Legacy Cup is the Event that Will Take the Sport of Hunters to the Next Level

May 28, 2005 -- Lexington, KY - Sometimes there are events or items that are essential for an industry or sport or business but they are a little bit ahead of their time. However, once they catch on (like the fax machine, or the computer, or the internet, or the cell phone, or even the TV and Radio) when you look back you say, how ever did we live without this. And such is the case with the Legacy Cup. It is a novel approach that not only does not require racing for points to qualify but also offers a way of limitless money to be won depending on the number of horses and riders who support the concept. This in a sport (hunters) that rarely, if ever, offers its competitors money.

"I think it is ahead of its time and more people need to participate and put money in the hunters," commented Vice President and competitor Louise Serio. "Some people are big supporters and others need to be if they want to see the hunter sport continue to grow."

The Legacy Cup is an add-back event, meaning the more people who enter; the more money is put in the pot. Entry fee is $400 of which $200 is put in the add-back purse to be distributed among the competitors in each of their respective divisions and $200 goes to the AHJF for administrative costs to run the event. Go Rounds have a guaranteed $1500 purse.

To give you an example; For the Pro classes that took place on March 12 the breakdown was as follows. A total of 49 horses entered the Pro 3' division and the $1500 purse for the first round was distributed through tenth place. The purse for the Finals was $9,800 based on the add-back system and the division total for Pro 3' was $11,300. In the 3'6" division again the first round purse was $1500 and with 44 horses entered, the Finals purse was $8,800, with a division total of $10,300. All the Finals purses paid out through the 20th place.

MORE ABOUT THE LEGACY CUP
The 2005 Legacy Cup took place over two weeks and was paired with the Kentucky Spring Horse Shows, one of the nation's top AA rated hunter events. Over the four years of its existence, the Legacy Cup has been fine-tuned but always remains focused on its original goal, which is to present an innovative, high paying, exhibitor-friendly event.

The 2005 Legacy Cup offered five divisions. There were two professional divisions; one at 3' (sponsored by Montoga Inc./Geoff Teall) and one at 3'6" (sponsored by Meralex Farm/Bryan Baldwin). Within the pro division new or developing Restricted Riders were also recognized. The Restricted Division was sponsored by Texas Supporters. A Restricted Pro Rider is a new professional or one who has not consistently won at upper levels of show hunter riding. Additionally, the status is based on Legacy Cup money earnings. Riders who have won more than $5,000 or who have placed first or second in Legacy Cup Pro 3' or 3'6" Finals are ineligible. There are also two Non Pro divisions; one at 3' (Finals sponsored by Derbydown, Inc. and Louise Serio) and 3'6", and the Legacy Cup Pony Hunter Division (sponsored by Shadyside Farm and Kate Gibson).

Each division offered one Go Round to rank the top 25 horses, based on their composite scores, for a clean slate final. All rounds were judged numerically by multiple sets of two judges positioned around the ring. In case of a tie, the Team 1 pair of judge's score broke that tie.

Also in the professional division there was a Pre-Green Incentive (won by Nassau and sponsored by Janet Read), a Leading Trainer Award (won by Havens Schatt the first week and Ken and Emily Smith of Ashland Farm the second week and sponsored by EP Bishop Company - this award went to the trainer whose students and horses accumulated the most money), the Belcort Farm Perpetual Trophy won by Cortie Wetherill for the owner of the horse (Take Away) that produced the highest single round score (278), and the Walter J. Lee Perpetual Trophy for the Pro rider (Schatt) who accumulated the most money ($9,839) throughout the 3' and 3'6" Pro competition.

In the Non Pro divisions, overall ribbons and separate ribbons were awarded for both juniors and amateurs in all classes. The Signature Trophy was given to the horse (Jazz) which won the most money ($1,484) in the Non Pro 3'6" Junior classes after the First Go Round and the Finals were totaled. There were leading Non Pro rider awards in each division and a Legacy Cup Non Pro Team Award to the barn (Ashland Farm) whose students accumulated the most money in the Non Pro and Pony divisions ($10,020).

WHAT THE RIDERS SAID ABOUT THE LEGACY CUP
The idea of the Legacy Cup was inspired by a similar concept that was started a few years back in Reining. It literally changed the face of the reining world and has raised it to another level and now it's time to see that happen in the Hunter World. Those who have recognized the value of the Legacy Cup sing its praises.

Schatt gave the Legacy Cup high marks. "It's a great idea. It really showcases the hunters and gives up and coming professionals a chance to be recognized."

On May 14th Schatt, Ocala, FL, and Take Away won the Pro 3'6" Finals. "He's amazing," said Schatt about the nine-year-old, 16.3h, bay, Oldenburg gelding. "He's slow, he's scopey and you never question anything you have to jump." His skill shone through and his score of 278 (out of a perfect score of 300) dominated the field and earned them $1,672. That score also gave The Belcort Farm Perpetual Trophy to Cortie Wetherill, owner of Take Away. Schatt also won the Walter J. Lee Perpetual Trophy.

Schatt also dominated in the Pro 3' division, winning the Finals on May 13 and prize money of $1,862 on Nassau, who also won the Pre-Green Incentive. The nine-year-old gelding was purchased by owner Gina Marie Mondel just before Christmas and Schatt said, "He's great to ride. He's pretty consistent and he knows his job." Additionally, the Leading Trainer Award for Week One was Schatt, whose students accumulated $8,034.

Michael Tokaruk said, "I am inspired by what the AHJF has done especially as a young professional working my way up the ranks. To be able to come to a show that rewards me as a young professional is very gratifying; that even within the professional division there are different levels of professional riders has definitely inspired me." Tokaruk (TN) and Polaroid, a 16.3 hand, 7-year-old, bay gelding, were competing in only their third horse show when they won the Restricted Pro 3' Finals and Championship. Tokaruk has a goal. "One day I want to be standing here as the Overall Pro Champion!"

Megan Davis also likes the concept of the Legacy Cup saying, "I particularly like classes where they give scores." Megan's mom agrees and plans to be one of those supporters. "It's a great organization," noted Kim. Davis (MD) rode her small pony, Far From Home, to the win on May 14 in the $1500 Pony First Go Round. The eight-year-old, 12.2 hand, Belgian Warmblood pony gelding "is really fun and pretty easy to ride. He has a nice canter and he likes his job," said Davis after her winning ride.

Lauren Bass (OH) said about the Legacy Cup, "I consider it the Grand Prix of the Hunters. It's really important to give amateurs, juniors and professionals a goal and it's fun to have a big class." Bass rode Candace Lubar's eight-year-old, 15.3h, bay, Selle Francais gelding Jivago to win the Restricted Pro 3'6" First Go Round on May 12 and Finals on May 14. In addition they won the Restricted Pro 3'6"Championship. Her total winnings were $1,656.

Bass had just recently returned to the hunter ring as an outgrowth of her own business, since most of her clients compete on hunters. Now she divides herself between the hunters and jumpers. "It's becoming more and more fun," she admits. "Both are very difficult in their own way. I am very competitive and I like the thrill of the jumpers. Both disciplines are technical but the hunters require an accurate, smooth and invisible ride which has helped me in the jumper ring."

PONY AND JUNIOR AND AMATEUR RIDERS SPEAK OUT
Jennifer Waxman complimented the AHJF for putting on the Legacy Cup. "It's so nice and so well done. The courses are always great and the ribbons are beautiful. This event is cool because it's different, which makes it special. Anyone can compete in the first round; you don't have to qualify or earn points," said the girl who's been riding since she was five years old and who intends to keep on riding.

Waxman and Tuscany, owned by Caroline Spogli, went to the head of the Pony division, winning both the Finals and the Leading Pony Rider award (for having won the most money in that division - $1,607). The 13-year-old Waxman, Cleveland, OH, was really pleased with Tuscany. "He is so awesome. No matter what distance he gets he always jumps perfect," she said, referring to the eight-year-old medium pony she's only been riding for a year now. This was Waxman's second year in a row winning this division. Last year Strike a Pose helped her earn that title.

"Cool" is how both Alexandra Skiffington and Shaw Johnson-Price referred to the Legacy Cup after they each took top honors in their respective divisions. Skiffington was both the winner of the Non-Pro 3'6" First Go Round and of the Junior division riding Noir, while Price won the Amateur section aboard Costello.

"This was a really cool class. There is no other class like it," remarked Skiffington. "It's something we look forward to each year. It's a money class as opposed to a point class. In most of the classes we are just competing for points and this is a lot of prize money. And it's nice to compete for a lot of prize money. "

Price echoed Skiffington's words. "I think it is really cool. I'm happy to be a part of it. I think it's neat that everybody gets to go in and everybody across the board is even. You are competing against people you don't know." Price was referring to the fact that the class was for non-pros, both Juniors and Amateurs competing together, unlike at the typical horse show where their divisions are separated.

Skiffington (Wellington, FL) won the Non Pro 3' Junior Finals on North Fork and was both the Leading Non Pro Junior Rider and the Leading Non Pro Rider based on money won ($3000).

In the Non Pro 3'6" division, Skiffington was the Overall Non-Pro 3'6" First Go Round winner and the winner of the Junior division riding Noir. Skiffington was named 3'6" Junior Leading Rider with her earnings of $1,767. Skiffington praised her eight-year-old gelding saying, "He is very sweet and he is a lot of fun to ride. He is soft, smooth, and comfortable and he has a very big stride, a floating stride." The 17-year-old, who lives in Wellington, FL, says Mrs. Quentin Alexander's Noir is "very consistent and I have a lot of confidence in him. I knew if I didn't mess up that I had the horse to do it on. He's very unique - he's very long legged. He is very elegant looking and very soft to watch go around. His looks and his way of going are what really separate him from the other horses."

Price, 41, Chestertown, MD, competed extensively as a junior and young adult but then took a 15 year break and it was only two years ago that she climbed back in the saddle again. When it was all over, Price was thrilled. "I was really happy that I was consistent. That's all I want is to be consistent. It's like building blocks - you build and two fall off and then you keep on building..." Her attitude paid off in spades and both she and Costello put in consistent performances. Costello (who also won the prestigious AHJF Hunter Classic at Wellington earlier this year with Louise Serio riding) suits Shaw. "He is totally laid back. He's one of those horses that you have to gear up and get going and he does great."

MORE FROM THE NON PRO RIDERS
"It's nice to have a class where you feel really special," said the 18-year-old Megan Schall, Minneapolis, MN. Her ten-year-old, 17H, Warmblood gelding Jazz, "is really smooth, comfortable and has a big stride," said Schall. She wasn't having much luck in the Kentucky Spring Horse Show on her other horses and so when she won the Non Pro 3'6" First Go Round she commented, "I was really excited and happy I could finish on a good note."

In the Non Pro 3'6" Finals, Charlie Jayne and Orange County won both the Overall and the Amateur standings and Schall rode Jazz to win the Junior section. Jazz also won the Signature Trophy as the horse which won the most money ($1,484) in the Non Pro 3'6" Junior classes after the First Go Round and the Finals were totaled. When the rider's earnings for both the First Go Round and the Finals were tallied for the Non Pro 3'6" division, Jayne was named 3'6" Leading Rider, after having won $2,239, and he was also the Overall Amateur Rider.

The 3' Non Pro division also received accolades from the riders (and surely from the horses if they could talk). Wendy Lewis (Cleveland, OH & Wellington, FL) won the Non Pro 3' Finals riding Forget Paris, a 10-year-old, 15.3 3/4H, Selle Francais, chestnut, gelding. Since Lewis is an Amateur rider and she also won the Amateur division and ultimately finished as the Leading Rider in the Non Pro 3' division based on money won. She earned $2,097 for her rides in both the First Non Pro 3' Go Round and Finals. Earlier in the week she wasn't even sure they'd be competing. Her horse (who she has had since he was four) had pulled a muscle in his butt but "Dr. Steele's acupuncture and a few days rest and relaxation did the trick," explained Lewis, about the horse she says "is not without his idiosyncrasies. He thinks he sees things he doesn't and he's not easy to ride. When he's good he's very very good but when he's bad he's awful. Yet, I have a synergistic relationship with him."

Additionally, Ken and Emily Smith of Ashland Farm, won the Leading Trainer Award Week Two for their student earnings of $6,850. The Non Pro Team Award, given to the barn whose students accumulate the most money in the Non Pro division, was also Ashland Farm for their students' total winnings of $10,020. Skiffington and Waxman were two of the students that helped them earn that award.

Of course Ken and Emily and their students were proud to win this inaugural award. "We love it," said Ken. "It's a great award and a great competition. It's nice to go indoors in the spring. It's the best of the best competing here and the competition is strong. The money is nice and the courses are wonderful. The presentation is special and they cater to the exhibitors."

Lewis overhead Ken's accolades about the Legacy Cup and chimed in. "I love it because it caters to the hunters and it's a show where the best hunters come. The AHJF does such a fine job, from the judges, to the staff, to the food."

Carol Cone, Weston, MA, rode her 15.3 hand, Swedish Warmblood, 14-year-old stallion, Harmony Bay, who wasn't showing any of the typical stallion traits to win in the Non Pro 3' First Go Round and the Amateur section. "He loves to please," said the petite rider about the horse that she purchased a little over a year ago. "I thought I'd get a good score and when I did I was thrilled, really happy for the entire team - my horse, my trainers Tim and Kelly Goguen, and my groom. It was incredibly satisfying. I knew my team was clicking again. We've been second and reserve a lot and now we are back in gear."

Like so many others, Cone praised the concept of the Legacy Cup adding that she plans to be a sponsor next year. She explained that, "The adults, unfortunately, are the under appreciated division in the horse show world and yet we help to fund most of the horse shows. There aren't many opportunities like the Legacy Cup to go indoors and to win money. They always have fantastic courses and immediate scores. It's a blast!"

WEEK ONE RECAP
The first week of the two-week Legacy Cup was for Pro and Pony riders and while Jennifer Waxman and Tuscany took the lead in the Pony Hunter division and Lauren Bass on Jivago dominated in the Restricted Pro 3'6" division, it was a Take Away victory for Havens Schatt in the Pro 3'6" division. Schatt also dominated in the Pro 3' division, winning the Finals on Nassau, who also won the Pre-Green Incentive. Additionally, she won the Walter J. Lee Perpetual Trophy and the Leading Trainer Award for Week One. Michael Tokaruk and Polaroid were the big winners in the Restricted Pro 3' division.

The May 12th Pro 3' First Go Round was won by Morgan Thomas and Nairobi, owned by Kimberly Wang Limited, while Chad Watridge rode Rhinestone Cowboy, owned by Kimberly Koloff, and Remington, owned by Ashley Deflin, to win first and second in the Restricted Pro 3' First Go Round. Rhinestone Cowboy finished just behind Polaroid in the Restricted Pro 3' Championship, while Nairobi finished 25th.

WEEK TWO RECAP
The second week of the Legacy Cup was for Non Pro Riders, both Amateurs and Professionals. It focused around two divisions based on height - Non Pro 3' and Non Pro 3'6". Each division was composed of two classes. There were over 50 horses in each of the 3' and 3'6" Non Pro First Go Round courses from which approximately 25 riders qualified for their respective Finals. When it was all over Alexandra Skiffington (North Fork & Noir), Wendy Lewis (Forget Paris), Carol Cone (Harmony Bay), Charlie Jayne (Orange County), Shaw Johnson-Price (Costello), Jennifer Waxman (Stylin), Megan Schall (Jazz) each rode away with at least one first place or championship ribbon. Additionally a number of special awards were presented during Week Two, which ran May 20-22.

In the Non Pro 3'6" Finals, Charlie Jayne and Orange County won both the Overall and the Amateur standings and Megan Schall rode Jazz to win the Junior section. Jazz also won the Signature Trophy in the Non Pro 3'6" Junior classes after the First Go Round and the Finals were totaled. When the rider's earnings for both the First Go Round and the Finals were tallied for the Non Pro 3'6" division, Jayne was named 3'6" Leading Rider, after having won $2,239, and he was also the Overall Amateur Rider. Skiffington was named 3'6" Junior Leading Rider with her earnings of $1,767.

Other winners during this final week included Jennifer Waxman and Stylin, who won the Non Pro 3' First Go Round. Carol Cone and Harmony Bay who won the Amateur section of that same class, while Waxman led in the Juniors. Cone and Harmony Bay also placed second to Lewis in the Non Pro 3' Finals and in the Amateurs. Shaw Johnson-Price led the Amateurs in the Non Pro 3'6" First Go Round aboard Costello.

The Non Pro 3' division paid out a total of $12,300. The Non Pro 3'6" division paid out a total of $12,100.

One of the great things about the Legacy Cup is that one class determines many winners. And the final class on Sunday, May 22 was a perfect indicator of that. The Non Pro 3' Finals was won by Wendy Lewis riding Forget Paris. Since both Juniors and Amateurs competed together, the same results also determined the Junior winner as Alexandra Skiffington on North Fork. Skiffington also ended up as both the Leading Non Pro Junior Rider and the Leading Non Pro Rider based on money won ($3000). Since Lewis is an Amateur rider she also won the Amateur division and ultimately finished as the Leading Rider in the Non Pro 3' division based on the money she won. She earned $2,097 for her rides in both the First Non Pro 3' Go Round and Finals.

THE LEGACY CLUB
While the competition was the nucleus of the event, the social aspects have become something that the exhibitors look forward to. This year there were even more chances for spectators and exhibitors to mingle with their family, friends and fellow horsemen. One request by exhibitors was to provide a better selection of food on the showgrounds. As a result, the AHJF introduced the "Legacy Club," a private members-only area for sponsors and table holders, which was organized by Kim Tudor. The "Club" overlooked the arena on one side and the rolling hills of the Kentucky Horse Park on the opposite side. The décor included flowers, a chandelier, white picket fencing and more. A buffet lunch was served daily as well as dinner for each of the evening performances. The grand finale was a thank you "Champagne Brunch." All the meals were home made by J.C.'s Catering. The meals were a connoisseur's delight and received high marks from everyone - especially those who are used to the typi cal horse show fare. All the tables were sold out before the show began. The AHJF also included a general exhibitor tent where anyone could pick up cold drinks, snacks and fruit.

This was Tudor's first time at the Legacy Cup and she was impressed. "The fact that the Legacy Cup is paired with a topnotch horse show and on one of the most impressive equestrian facilities (The Kentucky Horse Park) makes it extra special."

Skiffington made an interesting comment that is undoubtedly how most of the riders feel when she said, "It's very exciting to know that you did well and nice to know that all your hard work paid off. That's why we come every day - to work. We like to win at the end of the day. When you win a class it's nice to know that everyone's work has paid off - the grooms, the trainers... It's just exciting when you know you did well."

And with that the 2005 Legacy Cup ended on a high note for everyone who competed. While winning was their ultimate goal, being a part of this event also seemed to get high marks from everyone.

Executive Director Michele Perla said, "Our second year with the Kentucky Spring Horse Shows proved that this is a perfect match for the Legacy Cup. This venue has allowed for both growth in the number of competitors who compete at this event and in the sponsor support. Hugh Kincannon, Show Manager of the Kentucky Spring Horse Shows, sees and appreciates the value that the Legacy Cup brings to his horse show and has supported our efforts 100%."

By the time this year's event had concluded a total of 234 horses competed (which was up by 20% from last year) and $75,300 in purses was distributed. For more information about the Legacy Cup, contact the AHJF (335 Lancaster Street, West Boylston, MA 01583-0369), Phone: 508-835-8813, ahjf@earthlink.net or go to www.legacycup.com.
