Lake Placid, New York - July 1, 2012 - Darragh Kenny of Ireland rode Sandor
De La Pomme to victory in the $75,000
Horseware Ireland Grand Prix to conclude the 43rd annual Lake Placid Horse
Show, Presented by Sea Shore Stables, LLC.
Kenny, 24, who won the class in 2010 on Gael Force, was one of only three
riders from the starting field of 28 to reach the tiebreaking jump-off by
riding without penalty over the 16-jump, first-round course designed by
Steve Stephens at the North Elba Showgrounds. He was the first to return
for the 8-jump tiebreaker and he set the mark to beat with a fault-free ride
in 40.763 seconds on his 10-year-old, Belgian Warmblood.
Callan Solem of Chester Springs, PA followed Kenny in the jump-off and
finished in 43.623 seconds on VDL Torlando but with four faults for a rail
down at the sixth fence. The day's final entry was Kaitlin Campbell of
Upper Black Eddy, PA on Rocky W and she also had four faults and her time of
43.791 seconds placed her behind Solem in third and gave the win to Kenny,
marking the third consecutive year that a rider from Ireland has won,
following Kenny in 2010 and Jonathan McCrea last year.
"I knew the other two would be quick so I knew that I couldn't waste any
time, but I wanted to be sure above all that I was clean," Kenny said.
"Once I cleared the second-to-last jump, I knew I could get over the last
one so I galloped hard to save some time.
"He is a fantastic horse who has done everything I've asked of him. We got
him in February from Peter Wylde. He's naturally quick, very careful and
scopey. I am very lucky to have him."
Other winners on Sunday included Charlotte Jacobs on Kachina in the Pepsi
Beverages Company Junior Jumper Classic; Wesley Newlands on Lapacco in the
FarmVet High Amateur-Owner Jumper Classic; Nina Montross on Caprifol and
Isabella Norton on Carnaval Z in the Price Chopper NAL and WIHS Childrens
Jumper Classics; Margo Stever on Game Point in the Horse Show Services NAL
Adult Amateur Hunter Classic and Caroline Cline on Small Talk in the Horse
Show Services NAL Children's Hunter Classic.
Sunday's action also featured the Juliam Farm Lead Line Class and the
C.M. Hadfields Saddlery Parade of Champions.
The 43rd annual Lake Placid Horse Show is followed by the 35th annual I Love
New York Horse Show, July 3-8, which is highlighted by the $75,000 Woodlea
Farms Grand Prix, Presented by Sea Shore Stables, LLC., on Saturday, July
7. Following the $75,000 Woodlea Farms Grand Prix, the Richard and Diana
